China Day 2015

On April 23, 2015, students and teachers from throughout Minnesota gathered to hear from a panel of “Shanghailanders,” individuals who lived in Shanghai as Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. Panelists spoke about their life in Shanghai and shared stories from their time in Shanghai during a critical part in history. The panel discussion was facilitated by Professor Alejandro Baer, director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at the University of Minnesota. Baer is a professor in the Department of Sociology whose work involves research on the representations of present and past mass violence in a transnational arena of interconnected memory cultures.

Each participating school nominated a group of 2-3 students to present on the theme of Shanghai. Students were given five minutes to present in Chinese and explored anything and everything about Shanghai.

The 2015 theme coincided with an exhibit on Jewish Refugees in Shanghai sponsored by Confucius Institute. The exhibit was displayed at the Sabes JCC from March 19 - May 7, 2015.
