China Day 2010

China Day 2010

On April 16, 2010, more than 900 students from 15 Minnesota high schools gathered at Northrop Auditorium for China Day—an annual event for high school students who study Chinese. The event, centered on the theme of Chinese music, was coordinated by the Confucius Institute and cosponsored by the China Center. The program included performances by Chinese musician and Carleton music professor Gao Hong and her Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble, performing arts students visiting from Capital Normal University, and performances by student groups from eleven Minnesota high schools.

Gao Hong and the Carleton Chinese Music Ensemble opened the performance with Chinese music played on traditional Chinese musical instruments including the pipa, zhongruan, and erhu. After the group played several Chinese masterpieces, Gao Hong played solos on her pipa, including her own composition, “Flying Dragon.” The students from Capital Normal University—undergraduates who study music and dance—performed a guzheng solo and a dance from Inner Mongolia. Finally, groups of high school students from eleven schools took the stage to perform Chinese songs that they had practiced specifically for this event. China Day provided an opportunity to celebrate the growing number of Minnesota students learning Chinese language and culture.

China Day 2010 Students Perform in Beijing

Three Minnesota students who performed at the 2010 China Day event were selected to perform at the annual Confucius Institute directors meeting in Beijing in December 2010. Chanhassen High School student Nick Klauda and Patrick Henry High School students Thommy Tran and Nathan Tapp spent two weeks in Beijing rehearsing new routines and making friends with talented youth from around the globe who are all studying Chinese.

Videos of the Minnesota students are below. The entire performance were be shown on Chinese television station CCTV-4.
