Highlights from the Summer 2015 Shanghai Program

Pre-departure Orientation

Twenty students from all over the U.S. came to the University of Minnesota for a NSLI-Y program pre-departure orientation before they headed to Shanghai for a 7 week intensive Chinese language program. Read more.

Week of June 22, 2015

The first week went by with a mixture of formal classroom instruction and visits to several local middle schools.  Read more.

Week of June 29, 2015

On July 2, a Shanghai-based NSLI-Y alum came to the program site and shared with the students his NSLI-Y experience, as well as his post-NSLI-Y engagement with Chinese and China. Read more.

Week of July 6, 2015

NSLI-Y students had another busy and meaningful week of learning. After a short weekend excursion to Nanjing on July 12, students start their host family stays this week. Read more.

Week of July 13, 2015

During this week, NSLI-Y students spent a lot of time with local Chinese students, many of whom are their host siblings. Students continue language instruction in the morning. Read more.

Week of July 27, 2015

The NSLI-Y programing in Shanghai came to a conclusion on Friday, July 31, 2015, as NSLI-Y participants held their own Chinese commencement with activities reflecting their Chinese learning experience, speeches and gift exchange with the teachers. Read more.

Week of August 3, 2015

During the week of August 3, NSLI-Y participants spent five days in Beijing where they had the opportunity to visit the Great Wall, Tian’anmen Square, the Lama Temple and the Confucius Institute Headquarters. Read more.

China Summer Students’ Final Speeches

On July 31, 2015, Chinese language summer students presented their final speeches in Chinese, which reflected their six weeks of language learning in Shanghai. Read more.

Nanjing TV Interview

On July 10, 2015, NSLI-Y China students in Shanghai took an excursion to Nanjing, where they spent two days at a local school and interacted with Chinese students through sports; performances; lessons on Chinese characters; and a hike to one of Nanjing’s famous tourist spots, Tang Shan. Read more.

Seth’s NSLI-Y Experience in China (Summer 2015)

Seth has had a deep interest in the Chinese language and culture for a long time, to a degree he says was unique in his high school. It was in his freshman year that he learned about NSLI-Y from his Chinese teacher, and he knew that it was something he wanted to do. Read more.

NSLI-Y presentation at the 2016 National Chinese Language Conference

2015 NSLI-Y program participants Daniel Blackey, Seth Paternostro, Colson Thompson, and Grace Mabulay joined Assistant Director Dr. Yongling Zhang-Gorke at the National Chinese Language Conference in Chicago from April 28-30, 2016. Read more.
