NSLI-Y Students Co-Present at NCLC in Chicago

2015 NSLI-Y program participants Daniel Blackey, Seth Paternostro, Colson Thompson, and Grace Mabulay joined Assistant Director Dr. Yongling Zhang-Gorke at the National Chinese Language Conference in Chicago from April 28-30, 2016. Dr. Zhang-Gorke is the Program Director for the NSLI-Y in Shanghai program. She and NSLI-Y alumni co-presented on the topic of Enhancing Students’ Language and Cultural Competence Through Intensive Study Abroad.

Program alumni reflected on their study abroad experience in Shanghai and its impact on their language learning. Speaking in Chinese, all four students shared with conference attendees their experience living in Shanghai, highlighting stories of meeting locals, language instruction, and life with their host families. Although all four students had their own unique experiences, they all accomplished one thing while abroad, a greater understanding of Chinese culture/society and improved language proficiency in Chinese. All alumni co-presenters are continuing their study of Chinese in college.

Assistant Director Dr. Zhang supplemented the presentation with information about how educators can promote the NSLI-Y program in their schools, in addition to sharing her experience as a program implementer and important aspects of a success program abroad. View the powerpoint presentation here!

As conference attendees, NSLI-Y alumni had the opportunity to attend workshops and plenaries surrounding the conference's theme of Ambassadorship in Action.
