National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y)

Highlights from the Summer 2015 Shanghai Program

Pre-Departure Orientation, June 19, 2015

20 students from all over the U.S. came to the University of Minnesota for a NSLI-Y program pre-departure orientation before they headed to Shanghai for a 7 week intensive Chinese language program. During orientation, participants had an opportunity to get to know one another through activities, talk NSLI-Y alumni, learn more about the NSLI-Y program from the Department of State, and learn about the Chinese Language Flagship Program. Participants had the opportunity to discuss important topics like the cultural iceberg, cultural adjustment and how to maximize their opportunity to learn and use Chinese while abroad.

Dr. Yongling Zhang-Gorke, Assistant Director of the Confucius Institute is traveling with the NSLI-Y group for the duration of the program. Dr. Zhang-Gorke serves as the Program Director and Resident Director for the NSLI-Y Shanghai Summer 2015 Program.
