Highlights from the Summer 2016 Shanghai Program

Week 6

The NSLI-Y summer program in Shanghai has successfully concluded and the 25 students returned to their home on Sunday, August 7.

During their final week, NSLI-Y students did a third community service project. Participants went to a Chinese summer camp for elementary students and had a fun afternoon with the students on August 2. NSLI-Y students played game, made crafts, and practiced English with the Chinese students. They also practiced their Chinese with the students, who were very happy to make American friends.

NSLI-Y students took HSK levels 2, 3 and 4 based on their demonstrated Chinese proficiency during the program on August 5, 2016. They will receive official certificate from Confucius Institute Headquarters/Hanban in Beijing and can use HSK for future college Chinese placement and/or scholarship application.

The highlight of the program was the NSLI-Y commencement on Saturday, August 6. The twenty-five students presented their final project in front of Chinese teachers, their Chinese tutors, and Shanghai program staff. Students made a poster on their final project, and delivered a five-minute speech. Topics covered included Chinese sign language, Shanghai metro system, comparison between Chinese and American youth, Chinese pronunciation, Chinese college admission and its comparison with ACT/SAT, Chinese music instrument, Chinese tea, Chinese cuisine, and Chinese beauty standards, to name a few. In between the speeches, the students also played games such as telephone game in Chinese and charades with Chinese words. The morning concluded with an award ceremony when each of the students was presented an award certificate for their completion of NSLI-Y program.
