The Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota has helped 12 Minnesota K-12 schools receive funding totaling $486,501 through the “Confucius Classroom” initiative of the Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing, China. (More.)
Joan Brzezinski and Yu Wang attended the National Chinese Language Conference and annual U.S. Confucius Institute meeting in Chicago, April 29 – May 2. More than 900 educators and administrators attended the conference. Joan and Gregg Roberts of the Utah Department of Education co-presented a session on forging collaborative partnerships between K–12, universities, local government and other stakeholders to expand Chinese language programming at the K–12 level.
On April 17, 2009, more than 500 high school students from eight Minnesota schools attended China Day, an annual event for Minnesota high school students who study Chinese. Read more about China Day 2009.
At least 10,000 people visited the “Passage to China” event held at the Mall of America on April 4 and 5, 2009. At the Confucius Institute table, visitors had the chance to try 剪纸 jianzhi (Chinese paper-cutting) and 七巧板 qiqiaoban (Chinese tangrams). They also learned about the University of Minnesota’s Confucius Institute, including our resource library and our Chinese language and culture classes. “Passage to China” is an annual event sponsored by the Chinese Heritage Foundation.
From January 28 to 30, 2009, the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota hosted the acclaimed Renmin University Affiliated High School (RDFZ) Dance Troupe, from Beijing. Read more about the performance.
