Grand Opening!

The opening of the Confucius Institute at the University of Minnesota was truly grand. The festivities began with an open house, which included demonstrations of Chinese painting and calligraphy, Kung Fu, and music. Following the open house, a keynote lecture was given by Dr. Shuhan Wang, executive director of Chinese Language Initiatives at the Asia Society. Her presentation is available for download [PDF].

University president Robert Bruininks, Minnesota commissioner of education Alice Seagren, deputy consul general Chu Maoming, and Capital Normal University executive vice president Gong Huili then each gave remarks. The official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the State of Minnesota and the Hanban regarding the exchange of Chinese language teachers followed.

Bruininks, Seagren, Chu, and Gong then cut the ribbon to the resource center and the plaque was unveiled to the tune of the Minnesota Rouser played on pipa, erhu, hulusi, and guzheng. Following the ribbon cutting, a lion dance was performed!
